Our Story

The Pretender is proudly brought to life by Clancy’s Hospitality, an Indiana-based restaurant group dedicated to creating memorable experiences through exceptional food, genuine hospitality, and thoughtfully designed spaces. With eight restaurants across Indiana and Ohio, Clancy’s has spent decades bringing people together around the table. The Pretender represents the group’s latest chapter—a Japanese kissa-inspired hi-fi listening lounge where music, cocktails, and conversation come together in a truly unique setting. Rooted in hospitality and driven by a passion for creating places people love, Clancy’s Hospitality is proud to introduce this one-of-a-kind experience to downtown Noblesville.

Indianapolis Hi-Fi Sanctuary

Inspired by the timeless tradition of Japanese kissa listening lounges, The Pretender is an intimate hi-fi cocktail lounge where music takes center stage. Featuring carefully curated vinyl selections, handcrafted cocktails, and chef-driven fare, The Pretender invites guests to slow down, connect, and experience the simple joy of gathering around great sound, conversation, and hospitality.

Japanese Kissa-Lounge

Originating in Japan during the early 20th century, kissaten—traditional coffeehouses—evolved into jazz kissa after World War II, creating intimate spaces dedicated to the appreciation of music and conversation. At a time when records and high-fidelity sound systems were expensive and difficult to access, these listening cafés became gathering places where owners curated extensive vinyl collections and guests could experience albums through carefully assembled hi-fi equipment.

By the 1960s and 1970s, jazz kissa culture had become deeply woven into Japan’s musical landscape. More than cafés, these spaces fostered a sense of community and encouraged intentional listening, where music was treated with the same reverence as food, coffee, and hospitality. Today, the spirit of the Japanese kissa lives on around the world, inspiring a new generation of listening lounges that celebrate exceptional sound, thoughtful design, and the timeless pleasure of slowing down and sharing music together.
